santa brings the flu
that jolly old piece of shit can go shit in his boots.
i was tip-top last week. perky, cheerful, even looking forward to this 'holiday' that i usually hate. friday night, i went to my knitting because it was their holiday party. about 30 people crammed into her store. i won a slipper-making kit, which was pretty cool, since i usually don't win anything. ever. didn't eat a whole lot besides chocolates and the pumpkin whoopie pies that my sister made. OMG they were so good. watched the Star Wars Holiday Special... on purpose. the worst TV show ever made. seriously. if you haven't seen it and you hate yourself, go watch it. it's just terrible.
saturday was my friend's family pizza party. knit, drank diet root beer and ate as much pizza as i could cram down my gullet. then sat around and exchanged presents with my 5 closest friends and their spouses. actually, the spouses didn't get anything, they just get to bask in the glow that is our awesomeness. heh. the gifts this year were a little better this year. and by better, i don't mean bigger or more expensive. they were more thoughtful, more personal. amy gave us all an ornament with our group picture from October in it. dawn gave us all little wall plaques that had appropriate sayings on them. mine says, "attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference." kristin gave us each homemade cookies and these cool little LCD flashlights that had great patters on them. mine was bright pink flowers. shannon's was dark green paisley. margaret gave us each a jar full of these amazingly addicting pretzels with white almond bark melted in the center with an M&M in the center of each. and i can't remember shannon's gift because i'm an awful person. i gave everyone a little knit ornament from crate and barrel (i know, i should have made them) and a little hand sanitizer in difference scents each person liked.
we stayed out talking until almost 10:30. got home around 11:30. slept like the dead. woke up with a sore throat.
and it was all downhill from there.
the sore throat got worse. and worse. and worse, until i felt like i was gargling broken glass. a dry cough started. and i knew at that point i had what one of my coworkers had had a couple of weeks ago. i knew i was looking forward to sounding like a barking baby seal or a TB patient from 1918 in a matter of days.
monday, i woke up and went to work to get my laptop so i could work from home. it's the week of christmas, so no one was in the office anyway. i thought, i'll stay as long as i can. which was about 30 minutes. i went to the store on the way home, bought a bunch of crap like cough drops, and went home. my cough was amazingly productive by this point.
laid in bed for the rest of the day. ate a lot of ice cream, which would come back to haunt me. went to bed, dreamed that i was super hot, my hands and feet were so hot and i couldn't cool off. i woke up around 7am and my stomach wasn't quite right. went to the bathroom and had the most spectacular case of the dry heaves anyone could ever hope to experience. dry, thank god, because i hadn't eaten anything in the past 12 hours. turns out that i had a fever of 101. huzzah! the last time this happened (fever and barfing) was in 2002, when i got the chicken pox after i got the vaccine. yup, i'm that lucky.
so i laid around and felt SUPER SHITTY on tuesday. taking ibuprofen like it was candy. propped up on the couch like a ventriloquist's dummy, aching and sneezing and coughing. oh, god, the aching. seriously, i can take the raw sore throat, just take away the aches.
and sleeping. WTF? why does it get worse when you sleep? is it because you're laying down? i couldn't breathe out of my nose, so i had to breathe out of my mouth, which causes me cough and drool. so damn sexy, i know. i would wake up at 2am, my throat feeling like the cats just used it as a scratching post, go drink some water, spray some throat numbing stuff on it, and try to get back to sleep. the humidifier died on Christmas morning. water running all down the front of the dresser, all over the floor, all down the back of the dresser. Merry Christmas.
then came the worst part: i had to cancel christmas.
yup, there was no way in hell that i was going to be kris kringle and give this gift to anyone. so i emailed my mom and sister and told them that we'd have to reschedule christmas until saturday. so wednesday came and left like any other day. well, with the exception that scott and i opened our gifts to one another. i got some very very very nice jewelry. :) and some music. and the MASH box set from my in-laws!
anyway, this christmas sucked because i couldn't just enjoy a quiet week at work alone like i had planned. i had to abandon my sister and mom on Christmas day and clog up yet another Saturday because i got sick. the day was still good because it was spent on the couch with my husband and our cats, watching MASH and really shitty MST3K movies.
and it turns out yesterday i felt pretty good. today, i'm back to aching and being stuffy and tired. tomorrow i have to go into work because i had presents sent to work that i need for saturday.
oh, and i am supposed to meet up with some friends i haven't seen in 20 years tomorrow after work. i am going to go even if it fucking kills me. at least to give Dan a hug, have a cup of tea, and leave.
i guess i should have gotten that fucking flu shot.
