• was a 12-year-old sixth grader on summer vacation, about to go to jr. high.
• had had only stupid crushes on boys i would chase around the playground.
• was begging my parents to let me go to Blue Lake Arts Camp for band. i had just ended my first year playing the flute.
• had the Hard to Hold soundtrack in heavy rotation. what can i say? i hadn't developed my musical tastes yet. of course, i was also heavy into pink floyd, which isn't a bad thing.

• watched all of my friends graduate after had to drop out of college, as my parent's divorce made it too expensive to continue.
• had to watch the crush of my college life pack up and move to california.
• ruptured my spleen during an all-nighter at the art school (i was taking one class). i had mono but didn't know it and spend the week of finals in the hospital.
• had just moved into a professor's apartment who was going on an overseas sabbatical. it would be the first time i had ever lived alone.
• was listening to nine inch nails, ministry, KMFDM, the cure and depech mode all the damn time.

• had moved to chicago a year and a half previously and was in the middle of my first post-college corporate job at a children's book publisher.
• had gone overseas for the first time in my life. i spent ten days in london alone. it was totally awesome.
• had been single for the second year running...
• ... but in september, met up with my high school boyfriend and resumed dating him, even though he was fresh out of rehab and was living in a halfway house
• had to deal with the constant coverage of 9/11 and the fear of living in a large city.

• was still at the children's publisher, but would be laid-off the following year
• was engaged to high school boyfriend
• met a seemingly innocent fellow at my place of work whom i had known for a year, but had never gotten to know.
• got to know seemingly innocent fellow, found out he wasn't so innocent
• broke off engagement to high school boyfriend
One year ago I...
• had given up on seemingly uninnocent fellow and had started dating a great guy with whom i live currently
• had started on my third publishing job in two years, hoping to find a place where i could settle in for the long haul, but i would be laid-off again within the year
• saw the east coast for the first time and got to walk around Salem, MA, which was something i had always wanted to do
So far this year I...
• have been denied enrollment to UIC in my attempt to get a "real" degree in biology
• have successfully moved in to a new apartment with a boy and have made the adjustment wonderfully with him
• have been unemployed by a corporate entity for 6 months (full-time, anyway), but have been making it on my own by freelancing
• turned 32 with not much fanfare.
Yesterday I...
• worked an 8-hour shift at starbucks and was ready to saw my legs off
• went shopping in boystown with my sister and had a blast, even though i wanted to saw my legs off.
• thought about taking a summer chemistry class, but wondered if it was too late to sign up
• watched a british film with Scott
Today I...
• am barely awake while typing this
• will go to one of my freelance gigs and have a great time talking shit with barry
• will ride my bike to barry's to make myself feel like i'm actually working out
• will clean this goddamn apartment, since i can barely sit on my own couch
• might just try to finish one of those stupid roman shades
Tomorrow I will...
• relish in the fact that i don't have to get up and go to work, but i'll get out of bed at 7:30 anyway
• maybe go to the grocery store
• ride my bike
• go to weight watchers with annette and hope that i haven't gained for the 3rd week in a row
In the next year I will...
• try to take more chem and bio classes
• lose 10 more pounds
• keep in touch with long lost friends
• watch some of my friends get married and have kids
