B & E season is over
it's too cold to be breaking and entering, so i've gotten a second job to occupy my time. i am now gainfull employed by crate and barrel. i worked there a couple of years ago, and i thought it would be an easy way to make some cash before the holidays, so here i am.
the funny thing is is that i never shopped there before i worked there, and after i quit, i went back once, maybe twice. their stuff is overpriced and lacking in personality. if i need a pizza wheel, i'll go to target and spend $4 rather than $10. but now that i get a discount, things are almost to an acceptable price to where i'd pay for them. and when customers bring back old merchandice that we don't sell anymore, us employees can buy then at ridiculously low prices. i got a 4' x 6' rug for $4. and a $150 three drawer, metal cabinet for $15 because the top was scratched. so, it's not all bad.
and the customers are a hoot! i didn't know there was a difference between a white wine glass and a red wine glass. and who knows what a charger is?? these people do! it's amazing. and they come in a drop some hefty bank picking up these items. one couple on saturday handed me $1170 in cash for a dining room table and 4 chairs. i looked at the money and looked up at them and said, "i'm sorry. this is way to responsible of you. you're going to have to put this on a credit card and pay for it for the rest of your life." they laughed (thank god).
that's another thing: a lot of the customers have a pretty good sense of humor. i like joking around with them. nothing is worse, in my opinion, than being rung up by some soulless cashier who barely looks up at you. if you're handing a huge wad of cash to worker, the least they can do is say hello to you.
anway, if you're around the north and clybourn area in chicago, stop into the huge crate and barrel. i'll be on the first floor, explaining the different types of dishware to recently engaged, registering couples.
