cars: they just don't make 'em like they used to

my friend has a car that is falling apart. i won't name the make or model, for fear of corporate backlash, so i'll just call it a Pork Porkus. she bought this car the first year it came out... a bad thing in terms of car reliability. they haven't quite figured out the quirks with the new body, engine, transmission–you know, the whole car. but she really liked it and she thought that since it had been out in germany for a while, that the kinks would have been worked out. no. that wasn't the case.

so, she buys this brand-new, shiny, sparkly, red car in 2000. she got through the recalls, the doors not closing, the fuses blowing, the shocks breaking every 6 months (she lived in the city). she paid for this car until january 2005. and she said she was going to drive that car into the ground. but after she replaced the brakes, the spark plugs, the tires, the distributor cap and wires, and cleaned the fuel injectors, she ran into another problem: the transmission.

her 6-year-old, 82,000 transmission is crapping out.

that is just ridiculous. and i'm serious when i say that this is a conspiracy of the auto makers. "hey, if we make a 'disposable' car, then they'll have to buy a new car every 5-7 years!" i bet that exec made a ton of money for that idea. but here's the kicker: if your cars don't last a long time, we're going to stop buying them. do you think my friend is going to run out and buy another Porkus? hell no. and when i look at the used car ratings on consumer reports online, out of the 64 listed, only 8 are american-made. i think that's really pathetic. and of the 34 used cars to avoid, 21 are american-made. what the hell happened? is it just that the prototypers at the american car makers are lazy? 'cause there are import assembly plants here on US soil. so it's got to be who's designing them. and you know that those rich fucks at Ford aren't driving the cars they're making. they're driving foreign cars like BMW and Jaguar.

my friend is scrapping her american-made car and buying a honda. or toyota. congrats, Japan. we laughed when the movie Gung Ho came out, but you won.

ps. i drive a VW.
