Camping, dammit
I can't believe i didn't post about camping. it was a hoot. the weather was great, for the most part. the surrounding campers didn't make me want to kill them. here's a break down of what happened:
friday, sept 21.
i took the day off, kristin and shannon took half days. shannon's crap was already in my car and since she'd never camped before, it wasn't a lot. i packed the rest of my crap in my tiny VW golf, including cooler, tent, camping chair, food, pillow, sleeping bag, camping stove, and clothes bag. shannon called around 12:45 and i was off to get her! then we went out to glenview to attempt to cram all of my stuff, shannon's stuff and kristin's stuff into kristin's toyota corolla. by some grace of god, i got it all in there, with a tiny space in the back for shannon.
and we were off!
the first thing that went wrong was trying to get to 90. we had to go south on 294 to get to the kennedy, but i inadvertantly told kristin to go north. we realized our mistake and debated whether to correct ourselves or continue on our (incorrect) northern path. we decided to stay on 294 north. we got off on some rural route once we got into WI and ended up driving through some cool towns, like lake geneva and delevan. it took a little longer, but as long as we got there before dark, we were ok.
we got there and got our campsite. not a bad place. nice wooded lots where it didn't seem like your neighbors were on top of you. our site was a little shallow, but we made it work. we set up our tents, blew up our air mattresses and set out to make dinner. kristin had bought salmon and corn on the cob, which we made over the camp stove. it turned out ok, but the salmon was really thick and the stove was almost too hot, so the middle was raw. we ate the edges and the corn rocked.
through out the dinner-making, kristin got a text message. evidently we were in a severe thunderstorm warning. i broke out my weather radio and listened to the (spooky) voice from within telling us that storms were on their way. sure enough, we started to see lightning and hear thunder. it was hot, too. not late september-hot, but middle of august-hot. bleh. and the mosquitos were vampires.
more later.
