two weeks later
saturday, sept 21
we woke up, ate breakfast and went to Newville, WI, to meet up with my aunt and my cousins to go see the family cemetery plot. it was my grandmother's family plot, started back in the early 1800s, so we were itchin' to see it.
we drove and drove and drove and finally came to the cemetery. here it is:

it's small. really small. but it's cool because i recognized some names from this family book that my aunt let me borrow.
after that, we went to lunch at a diner in town and then drove back to newville. on the way, we stopped in whitewater to get some ice cream and then we went to a vintage clothing shop next door, where shannon came across an excellent find:

once we got to newville, we said our goodbyes, but then proceeded to go to the wine and cheese shop and hang out some more. it was a really good time.
then we went back to the campsite, where shannon, my pyro sister, made her first campfire:

then we ate dinner, which was cheeseburgers and mac and cheese. i cooked the burgers right on the grate over the fire. they were totally awesome. i even toasted the buns.
then we sat around and shot the breeze for a while. the plan was to wait until it got dark and then head out to the pier to enjoy the stars and peace and quiet. we drove to the bathrooms to hit the can on the way. while shannon and i were waiting for kristin, her car alarm started going off. i went in and told her and she said, "that's no wonder, considering i dropped my keys in the toilet." hahahaah!! i thought that was hilarious. but it soon became apparent that it was a little more serious than that.
she couldn't get the alarm to stop. even after she opened her car door, the alarm wouldn't deactivate. we kept hitting the button, but nothing doing. keep in mind, this is at 10pm in a quiet campground. and this is one of those "wooeeeewoooeeee ehh ehh ehh ehh" sirens. it cycles twice and then shuts off. but the second you touch the car, it would go off again. putting the key in the ignition didn't do anything, either. and we couldn't get it to stop. we were drawing quite the crowd, with no one offering to help.
eventually, a ranger stopped by. i explained to him very quickly that she had shorted out her key fob and we couldn't get the alarm to stop. by this time, kristin was poking around under the hood, which i give her credit for. that alarm was rattling my arm hair and i couldn't get near it without losing my mind. the ranger managed to disconnect the siren, which made us all a lot less edgy. he then dug around in her fuse box and managed to disconnect the two fuses to the alarm. the real test would be if that also disconnected the ignition kill switch and would allow us to start the car. kristin put her key in the ignition and...
it started!!
woohoo!! eventually, we got back on the road and headed down to the pier. but we were really shook up over the car alarm thing. we stayed about five minutes before heading back to the campsite. not quite the respite we were expecting.
sunday, sept 22
we wake up, groggily drag ourselves out of the tent and lumber over to make our oatmeal and tea. we sat around and discussed last night alarming festivities. then we decided to pack up. it was HOT. like 85 degrees hot. and humid. we were dripping messes by the time we had packed our stuff and we still had to deflate the air mattresses and take down the tents. shannon got to take down her very first tent. then she got to try to fold it up, origami-style, to fit it back into the bag it comes in. she got pretty frustrated with that, but i told her it always takes me two, sometimes three, tries before it fits. but with her help, we got on the first try. not to shabby.
and then we left, with our mosquito bites and all. and we realized later that it could have been a lot worse: kristin could have dropped her keys down the pit toilet. *shudder*
