diz-nee whirled

the husband and i went to disney world to celebrate his mom's 60th birthday. we left thurday morning and got to sunny (and blistering hot) orlando by about 1pm. we stayed at the ever-popular caribbean beach resort. we packed light, since we had been down there less than a year ago and figured we'd taken all the pictures and worn all of the socks we would have needed then. we didn't bring our laptops and i didn't even bring my camera (my small camera having broken down before we left).

so here's how it went: we were meeting up with scott's parents and his brother, mark. thursday was a day of rest. we all purchased 3-day park-hopper passes. friday we were going to go to the animal kingdom until we couldn't take it anymore (which would have been about 15 minutes for me), then we were going to go back to the hotel, take a nap, then hit epcot. i had never been to the animal kingdom, but the one thing i really wanted to do was ride Expedition Everest, which wasn't open when we went on our honeymoon. one thing that i don't remember ever doing as a kid was being at the park when it opens. it has its pros and cons. cons: getting up at 7am; waiting for the park to open; waiting for the rest of the park to open; waiting for the song-and-dance to be over so the rest of the park could open. pros: getting to be first in the line for the everest; riding everest again right after riding it the first time; beating the crowds.

let me say that the animal kingdom (aside from everest) sucked. it's totally for kids under... well, in the womb. and everything is so far away from everything else. you'd think it would take 5 minutes to go from ice cream stand A to bathroom B, but it really takes all day without a sherpa. so once we were done with the animal kingdom forever once we left.

the we went back to the hotel to nap. ahhh, sweet sleep. then we went to dinner at the italian restaurant in the Swan hotel (you know, one of the ostentatious hotels designed by Michael Graves). that was great. of course, getting there was a pain in the nuts. from the instructions given to Mark by the hostess over the phone, we had to take a bus to epcot, then a bus from there to the Swan. well, there isn't a bus to the swan, we had to run through the park, through the World Showcase, to the boat launch that would take you to the Swan. or we could run around the boardwalk, and arrive 15 sweaty minutes late to our reservations, huffing and puffing. the we staggered around epcot, full of italian food and lemoncello.

the next day, saturday, we went to the Magic Kingdom. again with the waiting to get in. again with the schmaltz. but then it was Space Mountain! then we rode Buzz Lightyear. then we did peter pan, the haunted house (of which we rode the day before it closed in June), thunder mountain, splash mountain (which i didn't ride), then we rode the train. after we went back for a nap, we went to dinner at the noodle station (that actually didn't have anything fried), then we rode Haunted House 2 more times, Buzz Lightyear about 3 more times, then space mountain.

but in walking from the haunted house to space mountain, i saw the teacups. we hadn't planned on going on them because his mom didn't really want to go on them. but i said, "i kind of want to go on them." so mark and scott and i got in line for them, while his mom watched from the sidelines. scott said to me, "you know that mark and i are going to spin you until you're sick." oh, i know. so we squeeze into a teacup (word to the wise: three adults don't fit comfortably into a Mad Hatter Teacup). the ride started and we started cranking that wheel as hard as we could. and with three adults, you can crank that wheel pretty hard. after a while, i was afraid to look up, so i concentrated on the middle of the wheel. then the brakes hit and we came to a stop, but my brain kept spinning. holy crap, i have never been that dizzy before in my life!! you know in the cartoons when characters stop after they've been spinning and their eyes keep going around.... it was exactly like that. i had to put my hands over my eyes until they calmed down enough to where i could stand up. and i could barely walk. we all were like we were drunk. we stumbled to the gate and managed to get off the ride. good times!

the next day, we went back to epcot. i thought that since we'd been there before, we wouldn't have to be there at the crack of happy. no such luck. we rode most of the rides, even the Finding Nemo ride. another word to the wise: don't EVER ride the nemo ride unless you're in a coma. we did test track and soarin' twice. we did mission space. his mom and i joined the green (lame) team and scott, mark, and their dad joined the orange (barfing) team. the girls got out in about 15 minutes. but then we had to wait for the boys for a long time. thinking something happened, i went up to a "cast member" to ask what the hold up was. he said, "there was an issue on one of the rides." and i said, pressing for more information, "like what kind issue?" "well," he said, "there was a protein spill, if you will." ha! i got to actually hear a cast member say "protein spill!" this was an awesome trip.
