it's different when you know them

i read the trib when i'm at work, usually when i want to take a break or during lunch. today, when i went to their website, their home page had a headline that said, "Prosecutor says it's murder." it was regarding a car accident a few years ago in which a suicidal woman ran her speeding vehicle through some red lights into a stopped car at 77 mph, killing the 3 guys inside. it reminded me of that Jeep accident in (i think) CA, where some guy parked his Jeep on the tracks of a commuter train to commit suicide, but bailed out of the Jeep at the last minute and proceeded to derail the train and kill some people. what a fucking selfish act. why ruin someone else's life, or lives, just because you hate yours? why not just get a fucking gun?

anyway, i'm reading this story full of nameless, faceless people when i come across a name that i think i know about half-way down: Douglas Meis, 29. it hits me like a ton of bricks. i had a huge crush on his brother, dave, when i was in jr. high and high school. we were in band together, cross country and track together. he played drums and he did well at it. i had started talking to him because he was my crush's little brother, but it turned out that doug was really funny and smart and nice on his own accord. i finally became friends with his brother right before their family moved to seattle in 1989.

i remember looking up some people from my past, including Dave and Doug. i found that dave had moved to north carolina, married and had a daughter. i saw some recent photos of doug and his band online. evidently he had taken his passion and done something with it. i guess it didn't sink in that he lived in chicago.

finding his name in that trib article was not unlike finding one of my best childhood friend's name on the social security death register. people from the past that i hadn't spoken to in years, but nonetheless had made an impact on my life. at least ryan didn't die from some stupid bitch's failed attempt at ending her useless life. he died from complications due to muscular dystrophy (at least i think that's what he died of). doug's death is just another number in the book of stupidity. and now we all get to sit around and feel the void.

if i feel annoyed at this, imagine his family. dave lost his brother. he'll never see doug get married of have kids, or watch him get inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. doug won't see his neice grow up. and all of doug's band members and friends (read the guestbook).

it just makes me sad because it's just such a horrible waste.

She hurt many people with her selfish act. I won't say out loud what should happen to them. Due to her actions, I am less one of the best bands I had ever heard. Silkworm.
Thats my feeling at the moment.
