image the last time you and your significant other ate dinner with another couple... it was probably someone you knew, at least one of them, pretty well. you might have known their job or their home or their children or siblings. maybe you were related to them. maybe you disliked them but stuck it out for your significan other's sake.
tonight, scott and i ate dinner with two total strangers.
after i got done working a 7 hour shift at starbucks, i went down to the loop to meet scott. we were going to the berghoff to have a drink. i told scott that i wanted to take him out to dinner, but wasn't sure if i wanted to go the berghoff. he said we'd see how busy it was and we could always bail.
we walked down and stood in line. it was out the door, but not down the block, which was reassuring, considering it was the second to last day it was going to be open. i was talking about the world's exposition of 1893 (blah blah blah) and scott asked if that was when the otis elevator break was shown. a man in front of us heard us talking and said yes, that was true. this started a conversation that wound around architecture, history, the berghoff, suburbs, and round and round. he was older, with an intermitent hacking cough. he was waiting for his wife, who was to join him for dinner. i remember him asking if we lived in the city. i replied yes, and that i should have visited thie berghoff when i had the chance in the last 6 years (not that i didn't have them, either).
his name was paul. and his wife, who joined us shortly before going in, was carol. once we got inside, we chatted a little more. the hostess came by and asked if anyone had a party of 3 or 4. then paul said, "i'm not sure what you had in mind, but i was thinking that we might increase our chances of getting seated if we ate together." sure! we said.
so we had dinner on the second to last night at the berghoff with people that we barely knew. and it was totally cool.
how often do things like that present themselves? how often do you strike up conversation with someone and learn about them? i had just been telling scott that i'm meeting people i would have never known by working at starbucks. they encourage you to get to know the customers. and here we put into practice and we met two really cool people. and we may never hear or see them again. but for one night, we were two couples enjoying chicago food and history.
